Traveling with kids can always be unpredictable, especially if they’ve never traveled before. Planes can be a scary, but fun adventure.

I don’t have any kids myself, but I do have an abundance of nieces and nephews. I have interviewed many moms on what they find to be helpful when traveling with their youngsters. My favorite idea I heard was making a fun surprise carry-on backpack for your kids. Here are some great options for putting one together:

To make your kid’s surprise carry-on, you need to start with a good backpack. Backpacks tend to be a better choice for youngsters, since they can easily carry them on their own. Choosing a bag that has multiple pockets is helpful to keep everything organized and gives you plenty of storage. Here is a great backpack for younger kids! If you have older kids you may want something a bit bigger. This backpack is great for just that!

Now for the exciting part. What to put in the bag. These reusable bags are great for keeping things organized and together. Nothing is worse than opening up their bag and not being able to find anything. Here is a list of ideas to choose from when planning out your kid’s carry-on:

  1. It is always good to make sure you get the essentials picked out first. I always make sure to have an extra outfit and a pair of shoes/sandals. You never know what can happen.

  2. Snacks! Get them something fun that they don’t get very often, and maybe even a treat. You can also get them a fun new water bottle to use on your trip!

  3. Pack some fun games to play. Memory, tic-tac-toe, and go fish are just a small list of games that are easy to travel with.

  4. Another fun idea is to have a big gift. You can really go two ways with how you want to do this. You can either have it for the middle of the flight, if they seem to be struggling, or you can give it as a “good job!” gift when you land. Play dough sets, Polly pockets, and Legos are great ideas for this. If you have real young ones, getting a new stuffy is always a good idea!

Traveling is a lot when it’s just you, but adding kids into the picture can make it even harder. So why not try to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone? Having a fun surprise is a good way to get them excited and keep them entertained on the plane, or even in the car. It’s so wonderful to watch their faces light up when opening something special. Don’t be afraid to have some fun with this! Good luck with your travels!
